Sugar and Spice

The Changing Face of Tooting High Street

Sugar and Spice celebrates the unique cultural heritage of Tooting High Street and explores why it was voted one of the coolest places to live before the pandemic. We will be sharing the stories of the sweet shops emerging from the war through to the emergence of the curry houses, paving the way for the curry mile.

The project will culminate in a cinematic inspired performance, pop-up museum, and digital art piece.

The project will be created with Tooting residents aging from 11-90 years old. Blending oral histories, research and creative practises, we will animate some of the rich history of Tooting. With further opportunities to work with the local Heritage Service and The National Archives. Interested participants can place those memories in a historical context – with participants being able to access some of the original Windrush documents amongst other things.

Young Company
Our young company hosted by Bounce Theatre will research, devise, write, and produce a cinematic inspired installation out of the research to celebrate the project in 2022.

Hosted by us, the Heritage Clubs are open to anyone 11+. The groups will collect memories and create art. The Heritage Clubs will curate a pop-up museum that can travel to spaces in Tooting where residents are less able to access heritage sites.
