Mrs Harrington

“I used to go to the eel stall and stand mesmerized whilst the lady (Mrs. Harrington I believe), wearing a blood-stained white coat and turban, used to pick up an eel, put it on the block, chop its head off, and instantly insert a long thin blade down the backbone, turn the knife, and whip off the skin.  Then chop the body up into inch or so pieces – my mouth would drop open watching those pieces – all wriggling!  Disgusting, but I couldn’t take my eyes of it.  I asked my Dad if we could buy the eels and bring them home and save them but he said they needed running water all day……. so, I couldn’t rescue them!
